Glamorgan 'Batlas' Launch for Neath Port Talbot: New Insights into Bat Records

Neath Port Talbot now has a clearer picture of its bats than ever before. Glamorgan Bat Group have put together the first Glamorgan Bat Atlas, which brings together years of records for Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, giving conservationists, recorders, planners, land managers and local nature groups a stronger base for understanding where bats have been found, where records are scarce, and where future survey work could make the biggest difference.
For Neath Port Talbot, the atlas draws together 2,388 bat records received from SEWBReC, the South East Wales Biodiversity Records Centre. These records cover the period up to the end of December 2025 and show how bat recording has changed over time and where there are gaps in recording effort.

What happens next
The next phase is to 'fill in the gaps'! More records from Neath Port Talbot will help improve coverage, especially in places with few recent submissions. Careful work on difficult species groups will also help strengthen the evidence base. Working with Glamorgan Bat Group, we hope to encourage recording in some of the empty grid squares on the maps, to try and build up a better understanding of bats across NPT.
